EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the impressive sculpture of Caractacus, created by artist John Henry Foley in 1856. Caractacus was a significant figure in British history, known as the King of the British tribe of Trinovantes and son of Cunobelinus. His kingdom encompassed Hampshire's Atrebates and possibly Gloucestershire's Dobunni regions, situated in the west. During the Roman invasion led by Aulus Plautius between 43-47 AD, Caractacus valiantly resisted against their forces. However, after facing defeat, he strategically retreated into south Wales to continue his resistance efforts. In this nineteenth-century artwork displayed at Guildhall Library and Art Gallery, we see Caractacus depicted as a powerful monarch wearing regal robes. Holding a shield firmly with one hand and grasping a spear with determination in the other, he embodies strength and courage amidst warfare. The intricate details captured in plaster showcase Foley's artistic skill while emphasizing Caractacus' noble stature. This monochrome portrayal evokes a sense of historical authenticity that transports viewers back to an era defined by conflict and resilience. This image serves as a reminder of Caractacus' unwavering spirit and his pivotal role in defending Britain against foreign invaders during ancient times. It stands as both an artistic masterpiece from the past century and an enduring symbol of national pride for generations to come.
