Catherine the Great (1729-1796), Empress of Russia. Portrait of Catherine II (1729-1796) who came to the throne in 1762. A German princess, Catherine was chosen at the age of 14 to be the wife of Peter III of Russia. The marriage was a failure and Catherine conspired with a group of nobles including her lover, Count Orlov, to depose the Tsar with Catherine ruling in his stead. Her reign saw Russia take an increasing role in European affairs and expand its empire with the addition of the Crimea and much of Poland. From an original drawing by A. K. Macdonald. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796. Painted by Alexander K MacDonald in 1937, it beautifully captures her regal presence and commanding demeanor. Catherine II was originally a German princess who married Peter III of Russia at just 14 years old. However, their marriage quickly deteriorated, leading Catherine to conspire with nobles and her lover Count Orlov to overthrow Peter and take control herself. This marked the beginning of her reign as Empress. During her time on the throne, Catherine played a significant role in European affairs and expanded Russia's empire by acquiring territories such as Crimea and parts of Poland. Her rule saw remarkable growth for the nation both politically and territorially. In this portrait, Catherine is depicted outdoors on horseback, exuding confidence and power. She wears an elegant dress that reflects the fashion of the 18th century while donning a tricorn hat that adds a touch of sophistication to her ensemble. Alexander K MacDonald's drawing skillfully captures Catherine's hand gesture as she points forward assertively, symbolizing her determination as a leader. The vibrant colors used in this artwork bring life to Catherine's image while highlighting her beauty. This print is part of John Player & Sons' Famous Beauties cigarette card series from 1937, showcasing influential women throughout history. It serves as a testament to Catherine's legacy as one of Russia's most prominent rulers during the 18th century.
