EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Chateau d Hougoumont, a historic farmhouse nestled amidst the picturesque Belgian countryside. Painted by artist Loux in the 19th century, this engraving transports us back to a time when this humble abode played a pivotal role in one of history's most significant battles. The Chateau d Hougoumont holds great significance as it served as a crucial stronghold during the Battle of Waterloo on June 18,1815. Here, British and allied forces valiantly defended against Napoleon's army at the bottom of an imposing escarpment. The name "Hougoumont" itself derives from its location on Gomme Mont or Gum Hill, where pine trees once surrounded it and provided resin for turpentine production. Through this monochrome depiction, we can almost feel the weight of history within these walls. The image captures both the rustic charm and stately grandeur that define this country house. Its architectural beauty stands tall against a backdrop of rolling hills and verdant fields. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded not only of Belgium's rural life but also of war's enduring impact on our world. It serves as a poignant reminder that even seemingly ordinary places can become extraordinary witnesses to historical events. This remarkable artwork is part of George Loux's collection curated by George Bury at The Print Collector—a testament to their dedication to preserving our rich heritage through visual storytelling.
