The Christmas Camp on the Plateau, December 1908, (1909). Artist: Ernest Shackleton

The Christmas Camp on the Plateau. The figures from left to right are [Jameson] Adams, [Eric] Marshall and [Frank] Wild. The frost can be seen on the mens faces, December 1908, (1909). Expedition members stand in front of a pyramidal tent on a flat snow field. A loaded sledge stands next to the tent, a union jack flies from one flag pole. A theodolite stands on a tripod to one side, ice-axes stand in the snow. Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "The Christmas Camp on the Plateau, December 1908" we are transported back in time to witness a momentous expedition led by the renowned Anglo-Irish explorer, Ernest Shackleton. The image showcases three members of his team standing proudly in front of a pyramidal tent situated on a vast snow field. From left to right, we see Jameson Adams, Eric Marshall, and Frank Wild braving the harsh Antarctic conditions. The frost clinging to their faces is evidence of the extreme cold they endured during their remarkable journey. A loaded sledge stands nearby, symbolizing both their progress and resilience. A union jack flag flutters atop one pole, representing the indomitable spirit of these explorers as they pushed boundaries and sought new horizons. Adjacent to them stands a theodolite on its tripod, an essential tool for mapping and navigation in this unforgiving terrain. Ice-axes planted firmly in the snow serve as reminders of both danger and triumph. Shackleton's second expedition from 1907-1909 was marked by extraordinary achievements; reaching Farthest South latitude at 88° S - just shy of 97 geographical miles from the South Pole - remains an unparalleled feat in exploration history. Additionally, his team conquered Mount Erebus, defying nature's most active volcano within Antarctica. This evocative illustration is taken from Shackleton's book "The Heart of the Antarctic" (Vol. I) published in 1909 by William Heinemann London. It immortalizes not only Shackleton's incredible accomplishments but also pays homage to his enduring legacy as one of history's greatest adventurers who tragically passed away during his final expedition at age 47.
