The Conquest of the Soudan, 1896-98: the Battle of Omdurman, September 2, 1898, (1901)

The Conquest of the Soudan, 1896-98: The Charge of the 21st Lancers at the Battle of Omdurman, September 2, 1898, (1901). British soldier Major-General Kitchener regained the Sudan for Egypt by his victory at Omdurman near Khartoum. The 21st Lancers, a light cavalry regiment, attacked what they thought were only a few hundred dervishes (Mahdist fighters), but there were 2000 infantry hidden behind them in a dry watercourse. 70 men were killed or wounded, with the loss of 119 horses, the highest casualty figures of any British regiment at the battle. Three Victoria Crosses were awarded to members of the 21st who had helped rescue wounded comrades. From " The Illustrated London News Record of the Glorious Reign of Queen Victoria 1837-1901: The Life and Accession of King Edward VII. and the Life of Queen Alexandra". [London, 1901]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "The Conquest of the Soudan, 1896-98: the Battle of Omdurman, September 2,1898" captures a pivotal moment in history when Major-General Kitchener led the British army to regain control of Sudan for Egypt. In this particular image, we witness the heroic charge of the 21st Lancers, a light cavalry regiment, as they unknowingly face a hidden enemy force. Believing they were only up against a few hundred dervishes (Mahdist fighters), the brave lancers charged forward with determination and courage. However, unbeknownst to them, there were actually 2000 infantry soldiers concealed behind their adversaries in a dry watercourse. This fierce battle resulted in heavy casualties for the British regiment. Seventy men were killed or wounded while tragically losing 119 horses – making it one of the highest casualty figures suffered by any British unit during this conflict. Despite these losses, three members from the valiant ranks of the 21st Lancers received Victoria Crosses for their exceptional bravery and selflessness in rescuing wounded comrades amidst chaos and danger. "The Conquest of Soudan" serves as an enduring testament to both triumph and sacrifice within military history. This photograph not only immortalizes Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener's strategic victory but also pays tribute to all those who fought bravely on that fateful day at Omdurman near Khartoum.
