Costumes of the Prado, 1845. Creator: Smyth
Costumes of the Prado, 1845. Inhabitants of Madrid:we see the mantilla, in all its national varieties. Then, we have the military uniform, and the cloak...the passion of the people for being well-dressed is incipiently illustrated...The prevalence of dark colours is remarkable; black having always keen the favourite, the national colour of Spain. On the general character of Spain Costumes, we borrow the following lively page from Mr. Fords admirable " Handbook of Spain" : " The gentlemen in their capas mingle with the ladies in their mantillas, the white-kilted Valencian contrasts with the velveteen glittering Andalucian; the sable-clad priest with the soldier; the peasant with the muleteer: all meet on perfect equality...and all conduct themselves with equal decorum, good breeding, and propriety". From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Costumes of the Prado, 1845" takes us back to a bygone era in Madrid, Spain. The image beautifully captures the diversity and elegance of traditional Spanish attire during the 19th century. In this snapshot, we witness the enchanting mantilla, worn by women in various regional styles. The mantilla's delicate lace veil adds an air of mystery and allure to their appearance. Alongside them stand men dressed in military uniforms, exuding strength and authority. The prevalence of dark colors is notable, with black being the favored national color of Spain. The creator Smyth skillfully portrays a society where people from all walks of life come together on equal footing. Gentleman wearing capes mingle effortlessly with ladies donning mantillas; Valencian children clad in white kilts contrast against Andalucians shimmering in velveteen; priests draped in sable robes converse with soldiers; peasants engage with muleteers - all displaying impeccable decorum and good breeding. This evocative engraving was originally featured in the renowned "Illustrated London News" publication from 1845. It offers us a glimpse into Spain's rich cultural heritage through its vibrant costumes and reflects the passion that Spaniards have always had for dressing well. As we admire this historical gem captured by Smyth, let us appreciate how clothing can be more than mere fabric - it is an expression of identity, tradition, and unity among diverse communities throughout history.
