EDITORS COMMENTS

The print captures a profound moment in art history as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the renowned British poet, illustrator, painter, and translator, is depicted drawing an angel on the anniversary of Beatrice's death. This painting, housed in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, serves as an illustration to La Vita Nuova by Dante Alighieri. Rossetti was deeply influenced by medieval art and literature, particularly the works of his namesake Dante Alighieri. In fact, he translated Alighieri's masterpiece in 1848. His artistic journey led him to found the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais in 1848. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Rossetti had a fascinating personal life. He married Elizabeth Siddal who became his muse for many paintings including "Beata Beatrix" created shortly after her untimely death. Later on, Rossetti became a founding partner in Morris & Co. , a prominent decorative arts firm that played a significant role in the Arts and Crafts movement. It was during this time that he developed a close relationship with Jane Morris (William Morris' wife), who also served as one of his muses. This image is part of Lucien Pissarro's book "Rossetti - Masterpieces in Colour" published around 1912 by TC & EC Jack and Frederick A Stokes Co. , offering viewers an insight into Rossetti's extraordinary talent and complex life story.
