Death of Van Tromp, 10 August 1653, (c1880)
Death of Van Tromp, 10 August 1653, (c1880). Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (23 April 1598 - 10 August 1653) was an officer and later admiral in the Dutch navy. In the First Anglo-Dutch War of 1652 to 1653, Tromp commanded the Dutch fleet in the battles of Dover, Dungeness, Portland, the Gabbard and Scheveningen. In the latter, he was killed by a sharpshooter in the rigging of William Penns (1621-1670) ship. His acting flag captain, Egbert Bartholomeusz Kortenaer (1604-1655), on the Brederode kept up fleet morale by not lowering Tromps standard, pretending Tromp was still alive. From British Battles on Land and Sea, Vol. I, by James Grant. [Cassell Petter & Galpin, London, Paris & New York, c1880]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a poignant moment in history - the death of Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp on 10 August 1653. In this image, we see the brave admiral standing tall on the deck of his ship, surrounded by his loyal crew. His flag captain, Egbert Bartholomeusz Kortenaer, valiantly keeps up fleet morale by refusing to lower Tromp's standard, even though their beloved leader has fallen. Tromp was a renowned officer and admiral in the Dutch navy during the First Anglo-Dutch War. He commanded the Dutch fleet in several crucial battles against the British forces. However, it was during the Battle of Scheveningen that tragedy struck as he was fatally shot by a sharpshooter hiding in William Penn's ship rigging. This historic moment is beautifully captured in black and white, emphasizing both its significance and somberness. The image showcases not only Tromp's bravery but also highlights the camaraderie among his crew members who kneel beside him with deep respect. The photograph is part of James Grant's book "British Battles on Land and Sea" published around 1880. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by naval officers like Tromp during times of war and honors their unwavering dedication to their country.
