The Distin Family, 1844. Creator: Unknown

The Distin Family, 1844. John Distin and his sons were British musicians who performed on saxhorns and were influential in the evolution of brass instruments in then popular music. Mr. Distin and his four sons have been for several years before the public. Mr. Distin senior, for more than nine years, was principal trumpet in the private band of King George IV. They...were invited to make a trial of some newly-invented instruments, manufactured by M. Adolphe Sax, in Paris. Upon the introduction of the Distins improved Sax Horns in Paris, they at once ensured success...The Distins are at present the only performers on the Sax Horn, which unites the powers of the French horn and those of the cornet-a-piston but is infinitely superior to both, for it combines the mellowness and sweetness of the former, with all the brilliancy and power of the latter. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

The Distin Family, 1844 - Pioneers of Brass Music

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the esteemed Distin Family, a group of British musicians who left an indelible mark on the evolution of brass instruments in popular music during the 19th century. Led by John Distin, a former principal trumpet player in King George IV's private band, this talented family ensemble consisted of Mr. Distin and his four sons. Renowned for their virtuosity and musical prowess, the Distins were invited to Paris to test out newly-invented instruments crafted by M. Adolphe Sax himself. The introduction of these innovative sax horns instantly guaranteed success for the family as they became the sole performers on this unique instrument that combined the powers of both French horn and cornet-a-piston. The engraving exudes a sense of pride and accomplishment as each member is depicted playing their respective instrument with great skill and passion. Their dedication to perfecting their craft shines through as they effortlessly blend mellowness with brilliance, sweetness with power. Published in "Illustrated London News" in 1844, this historic image serves as a testament to not only the talent but also the influence that John Distin and his sons had on shaping Victorian-era music. It stands as a reminder that even unknown creators can leave an everlasting impact on art forms that transcend time.
