Dr. Wilson Working Up The Sketch Which Is Given at P. 258, 1911, (1913). Artist

Dr. Wilson Working Up The Sketch Which Is Given at P. 258, 1911, (1913). Doctor, painter and naturalist Edward Wilson (1872-1912) was unable to use his watercolour paints outdoors as they would have frozen in temperatures which reached -70F. Instead he made notes about what colours to use and then painted them in the comparative warmth of the hut at Cape Evans. He died with Scott on the way back from the Pole. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the determined spirit of Dr. Wilson, a remarkable individual who defied extreme Antarctic conditions to pursue his passion for art and science. In this image, taken during the Terra Nova Expedition in 1911, we see Dr. Wilson diligently working on a sketch inside the cozy confines of Cape Evans hut. Known as both a doctor and painter, Edward Wilson faced an arduous challenge when it came to creating his watercolor paintings outdoors. With temperatures plummeting to -70F, his paints would freeze instantly upon exposure to the frigid air. Undeterred by this obstacle, he adapted by meticulously jotting down notes about colors while braving the harsh elements outside. Once back in the warmth of Cape Evans hut, Dr. Wilson transformed these meticulous notes into vibrant works of art that vividly depicted Antarctica's awe-inspiring landscapes and wildlife. His dedication to capturing nature's beauty was unparalleled. Tragically, Dr. Wilson met his untimely demise alongside Captain Robert Falcon Scott and their fellow explorers during their ill-fated return journey from the South Pole in 1912. Their bodies were discovered eight months later along with poignant diaries detailing their valiant struggle against nature's merciless forces. This photograph serves as a testament not only to Dr. Wilson's artistic talent but also to his unwavering commitment towards scientific exploration amidst unforgiving circumstances—a legacy forever etched in history through Scott's Last Expedition documentation published in 1913.
