The Duke of Orleans leaves the Royal Palace, Paris, 31st July 1830 (1882-1884)
The Duke of Orleans leaves the Royal Palace, Paris, 31st July 1830 (1882-1884). A man waves the republican tricolor as Louis Philippe, Duke of Orleans, makes his way on horseback through the barricades to the Hotel de Ville. The July Revolution of 1830 overthrew the monarchy of King Charles X and his unpopular conservative regime. Lous Philippe, head of the more liberal Orleans branch of the House of Bourbon, assumed the throne with the title King of the French, rather than the more traditional King of France in order to emphasise the popular origin of his reign. Louis Philippe ruled France until the monarchy was overthrown by the Revolution of 1848. A print from La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles, Volume IV, F Roy editor, A Challamel, Saint-Antoine, 1882-1884

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Duke of Orleans, Louis Philippe, rides through the barricades to the Hotel de Ville amidst a sea of cheering crowds and waving flags. This iconic print captures a pivotal moment in French history - the July Revolution of 1830. The revolution marked the overthrow of King Charles X and his conservative regime, paving the way for Louis Philippe to assume the throne as King of the French. Louis Philippe's choice to be known as "King of the French" instead of "King of France" was a deliberate move to emphasize his popular support and connection with the people. As he navigates through Paris on horseback, one man proudly waves the republican tricolor flag, symbolizing both patriotism and rebellion against an unpopular monarchy. The atmosphere depicted in this black-and-white engraving is charged with excitement and hope for change. The image showcases not only a significant historical event but also reflects concepts such as popularity, sovereignty, and national identity. This print from 'La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles' transports us back to 19th-century Paris when revolutions were reshaping nations across Europe. It serves as a reminder that even in times of great upheaval, there can be moments that unite people under shared ideals.
