Fermenting vessels at Tetleys brewery, Leeds, West Yorkshire, 1968

Fermenting vessels at Tetleys brewery, Leeds, West Yorkshire, 1968. The Tetley familys links with the beer industry reach back into the 1740s when William Tetley was described as a maltster in Armley. His son William then expanded the business, and it was then passed to his son Joshua. The original brewery was opened on the south banks of the river Aire in Leeds in 1822 and by the late 2000s 200 million pints of beer were being brewed on the site every year. Tetleys were taken over in 1998 by Danish brewers Carlsberg. In 2008, citing falling demand for beer as the reason, they announced plans to close the Leeds brewery in 2011 and move production to Northampton

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Tetleys brewery in Leeds, West Yorkshire, back in 1968. The image showcases the impressive fermenting vessels that were at the heart of this renowned beer-making establishment. The history of Tetley's involvement in the brewing industry can be traced back to the 1740s when William Tetley first established himself as a maltster in Armley. Over time, his son William expanded the business, eventually passing it on to his son Joshua. In 1822, Joshua opened the original brewery on the south banks of the river Aire in Leeds. By 1968, when this photograph was taken by Michael Walters from Paul Walters Worldwide Photography Ltd. , Tetleys had become an industrial powerhouse producing an astounding 200 million pints of beer annually. The image not only highlights these massive fermenting vessels but also provides a glimpse into an era where manual labor played a crucial role in brewing. However, despite its long-standing success and rich heritage, Tetleys faced challenges towards the end of the century. In 1998, Danish brewers Carlsberg took over ownership due to falling demand for beer. Then came another blow; plans were announced in 2008 to close down this iconic brewery by 2011 and relocate production to Northampton. This print serves as a poignant reminder of both Tetleys' historic legacy within British brewing and how industries evolve with changing times and demands.
