First manned flight in a hydrogen balloon, France, 1 December 1783 (1887)

First manned flight in a hydrogen balloon, France, 1 December 1783 (1887). French aeronauts Jacques Charles (1746-1823) and Noel Robert made the first manned (free flight) ascent in a hydrogen balloon, designed by Charles, a physics professor, and constructed by Robert and his brother Jean. It took off in front of a crowd of 400, 000, landing two hours later at Nesle-la-Vallee, over 27 miles away. Robert alighted there but Charles re-ascended in the balloon, as seen here, reaching an altitude of over 9000 feet. From Histoire des Ballons by Gaston Tissandier. (Paris, 1887)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a monumental moment in history - the first manned flight in a hydrogen balloon. It was on 1 December 1783, in France, when French aeronauts Jacques Charles and Noel Robert embarked on this groundbreaking adventure. The hydrogen balloon, meticulously designed by Charles, a physics professor, was constructed by Robert and his brother Jean. As the balloon took off amidst an awe-inspiring crowd of 400,000 spectators, anticipation filled the air. Over the course of two hours, the balloon gracefully soared through the skies for more than 27 miles before landing at Nesle-la-Vallee. While Robert chose to alight there, Charles fearlessly re-ascended into the heavens. The engraving depicts Charles' second ascent as he reached astonishing heights of over 9,000 feet. This image showcases not only their remarkable achievement but also highlights their courage and determination to push boundaries in aviation. This historic event marked a significant milestone in human innovation and technological advancement during the late eighteenth century. It symbolizes humanity's unyielding quest for exploration and discovery. Preserved within this colorized print from Gaston Tissandier's "Histoire des Ballons" we are reminded of these pioneers who dared to dream beyond what seemed possible at that time. Their accomplishment paved the way for future generations to soar even higher into uncharted territories of flight and beyond.
