Frickley Colliery, South Elmsall, West Yorkshire, 1965. Artist: Michael Walters

Frickley Colliery, South Elmsall, West Yorkshire, 1965. With its shaft sunk in 1905, Frickley Colliery in the village of South Elmsall, West Yorkshire, was worked until November of 1993 when it was closed. It was the scene of civil unrest during the Miners Strike (1984-1985) and was one of the last pits to resume work due to a group of hardline union members from Kent picketing the pit gates after the NUM had called off the strike and the Frickley miners refusing to cross the picket line

Frickley Colliery - A Glimpse into the Industrial Heart of West Yorkshire, 1965

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print by artist Michael Walters takes us back to the year 1965, capturing a pivotal moment in the history of Frickley Colliery. Nestled in the village of South Elmsall, West Yorkshire, this coal mine had been operational since its shaft was sunk in 1905. The image transports us to an era when coal mining was at its peak and played a vital role in Britain's industrial landscape. The towering pithead stands as a testament to the hard work and determination of countless miners who toiled underground for decades. However, it wasn't just about extracting coal; Frickley Colliery holds historical significance beyond its industrial function. During the tumultuous Miners Strike of 1984-1985, this site became a focal point for civil unrest. Even after the strike was called off by NUM (National Union of Mineworkers), hardline union members from Kent picketed outside Frickley's gates, causing delays in resuming operations. Walters' photograph captures not only the physicality of this colliery but also hints at its social impact on surrounding communities. The railway tracks winding through the frame symbolize both transportation and connection - linking workers with their families and carrying away tons of valuable resources that fueled Britain's growth. As we gaze upon this evocative snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded of Frickley Colliery's place within our collective heritage - an enduring symbol representing an era defined by industry, resilience, and community spirit.
