General Benjamin Henry Grierson, Union cavalry general, 1862-1867. In 1863 Grierson (1826-1911) commanded the operation known as Griersons Raid, an 800 mile long advance deep into Confederate territory that formed part of General Ulyssess Grants Vicksburg campaign. After the Civil War he organised and commanded the 10th Cavalry, one of two regiments comprised of black enlisted men and white officers popularly known as the Buffalo Soldiers.
