Georges Guynemer, French fighter ace, 9 September 1917

Georges Guynemer, French fighter ace, 9 September 1917. Guynemer (1894-1917) became the first French ace to attain 50 victories, a mark he reached at the end of July 1917. As his tally grew, Guynemer was lionized by the French press and became a national hero, with his exploits going some way to taking the publics mind off the appalling losses being sustained in the trenches at the time. On 11 September 1917, with a total of 53 kills to his credit, Guynemer was apparently shot down after attacking a German observation plane. Neither his aeroplane nor his body were ever found

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Georges Guynemer, the celebrated French fighter ace, on 9 September 1917. At just 23 years old, Guynemer achieved an extraordinary feat by becoming the first French ace to reach a remarkable tally of 50 victories in aerial combat. His exceptional skills and bravery earned him widespread admiration from both the French press and the public, making him a national hero during a time when France was enduring devastating losses in the trenches of World War I. On that fateful day of 11 September 1917, with his kill count standing at an impressive 53, Guynemer embarked on yet another daring mission. However, tragedy struck as he engaged in combat with a German observation plane and was seemingly shot down. Despite extensive searches conducted afterwards, neither his aircraft nor his body were ever found. This poignant image showcases Guynemer donning his military uniform while holding onto his machine gun—a symbol of courage and determination. The monochrome composition adds depth to this historical moment captured in black and white. As we reflect upon this photograph today, it serves as a reminder of the immense sacrifices made by individuals like Georges Guynemer during World War I. Their unwavering spirit and selflessness continue to inspire generations as we honor their memory and pay tribute to their heroic contributions to our shared history.
