Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, German philosopher and mathematician, (1836). Artist: B Holl
Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, German philosopher and mathematician, (1836). Leibniz (1646-1716) published his system of infinitesimal calculus in 1684, three years before Isaac Newton who, however, claimed priority as inventor because his publication related to earlier work. The controversy was never settled. As a philosopher, Leibnitz expounded the theory that the Universe is composed of monads, a simple substance that is used to create all other compounds. He died without recognition and with almost all his work unpublished

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, a renowned German philosopher and mathematician. Created in 1836 by B Holl, this engraving portrays Leibniz with his signature long curly hair, reflecting the fashion of the time. Leibniz's intellectual contributions were groundbreaking. He published his system of infinitesimal calculus in 1684, preceding Isaac Newton by three years. However, a controversy arose as Newton claimed priority due to his earlier work on the subject. This dispute remains unresolved to this day. Beyond mathematics, Leibniz was also a profound philosopher who proposed that the Universe is composed of monads – simple substances that form all other compounds. Despite his brilliance and innovative ideas, he died without receiving recognition for much of his unpublished work. The portrait showcases Leibniz's thoughtful gaze and distinguished presence. It serves as a reminder of an extraordinary mind whose impact on philosophy and mathematics continues to be felt centuries later. This historical image provides us with a glimpse into the life and achievements of one of Germany's most influential figures. Through B Holl's skillful craftsmanship, we are transported back in time to witness the brilliance and legacy left behind by Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz.
