Gran With Mule Lal Khan, c1911, (1913). Artist: Frank Debenham

Gran With Mule Lal Khan, c1911, (1913). Norwegian ski expert, aviator and writer Tryggve Gran (1888-1980). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Gran With Mule Lal Khan" captures the remarkable spirit of adventure and exploration that defined the early 20th century. Taken in c1911 by artist Frank Debenham, this image features Tryggve Gran, a Norwegian ski expert, aviator, and writer who was part of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition. The expedition, which took place from 1910 to 1913, aimed to continue scientific research in Antarctica while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, Scott and his team discovered that they had been beaten by a month by Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition. In this photograph, Gran is seen with his mule named Lal Khan. The presence of animals like mules was crucial for transportation purposes during these treacherous expeditions across icy terrains. The image showcases Gran's resilience and determination as he navigates through challenging conditions alongside his trusty companion. Tragically, despite their valiant efforts and unwavering courage in the face of adversity, Scott and his remaining team members perished due to extreme weather conditions and dwindling supplies. Their bodies were discovered eight months later along with their poignant diaries. This print serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit that drove explorers like Gran and Scott to push beyond known boundaries in pursuit of knowledge and discovery. It stands as a reminder of both triumphs achieved against all odds and the sacrifices made in our relentless quest for exploration.
