EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Tsar Bell, also known as the Tsarsky Kolokol or Royal Bell, which was commissioned by Empress Anna Ivanovna in 1893. Located in the Moscow Kremlin, this iconic bell has never been rung due to its unfortunate breakage during metal casting. The bell is made of bronze and adorned with intricate relief images of baroque angels, plants, oval medallions featuring saints, and even life-size portraits of Empress Anna and Tsar Alexey. The image captures the grandeur of this historic masterpiece against the backdrop of a bustling plaza within the fortress-like walls of Moscow's Kremlin. The impressive dome and spire rise high above the surrounding buildings, creating a striking silhouette against the sky. This architectural marvel stands as a testament to Russia's rich religious heritage and serves as a popular tourist attraction. Published in 1893 by Frederick Warne & Co. , this monochrome engraving from "The Pictorial Treasury of Famous Men and Famous Deeds" transports viewers back to the 19th century when it was first unveiled. Its detailed depiction allows us to appreciate not only its physical beauty but also its symbolic significance within Russian history. With its combination of historical charm and artistic elegance, this print invites us to contemplate both the silence that surrounds this silent bell and our own connection to centuries past.
