EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored albumen portrait captures the timeless beauty of Princess Dagmar, also known as Maria Feodorovna. The unknown creator skillfully depicts her in a bust portrait, with her body turned slightly to the left and her head facing forward. Adorned with a snood behind her head, secured by a gold band and a vibrant red bow atop, Princess Dagmar exudes elegance. Her evening gown features a ruffled yoke painted in striking red hues, accentuated by delicate green ribbons. Multiple strands of pearls gracefully adorn her neck, adding an air of regality to the composition. The handwritten graphite inscription along the bottom reveals that she is the sister of the Princess of Wales. Printed below the image is simply "PRINCESS DAGMAR" emphasizing her royal status. Housed within an album page framed by triple-lined gold borders, this hand-colored print showcases both artistic craftsmanship and historical significance. The graphite inscription inside the frame further identifies it as depicting Princess Dagmar herself. Dating back to the 19th century, this remarkable photograph offers us a glimpse into history and cultural heritage. It serves as a testament to not only Princess Dagmar's allure but also to photography's ability to immortalize moments in time for future generations to appreciate and admire at places like NMAAHC - National Museum of African American History and Culture.
