The Hut and the Western Mountains from the Top of the Ramp, c1910–1913, (1913)

The Hut and the Western Mountains from the Top of the Ramp, c1910– 1913, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

The Hut and the Western Mountains from the Top of the Ramp

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a significant moment in history. Taken during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition to Antarctica, this image showcases the harsh beauty of the frozen landscape. The Terra Nova Expedition, which took place from 1910 to 1913, was an ambitious scientific endeavor led by Scott. With a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, and photographers among others, they aimed to continue their research while also striving to be the first to reach the South Pole. In this particular photograph, we see The Hut standing proudly against a backdrop of majestic Western Mountains. The rugged terrain and vast icy expanse evoke both awe and trepidation. It serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by these brave explorers in their quest for discovery. Tragically, despite reaching their destination on January 17th, 1912, Scott and his team were devastated to find that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there by just one month. Battling blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey, Scott and his companions met with an untimely demise at the end of March. This haunting image not only immortalizes those who lost their lives in pursuit of knowledge but also stands as a testament to human resilience in extreme conditions. Preserved within "Scotts Last Expedition" it continues to inspire generations with its powerful narrative and enduring legacy.
