Ichaboe - mode of shipping the guano, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Ichaboe - mode of shipping the guano, 1844. Loading bird manure off the coast of south-west Africa. Account of Lieutenant Petrie: Up to the 24th of May, in this year alone, twelve ships have already arrived in Liverpool, whose united cargoes amount to 6670 tons. A large number of ships are now loading, by last accounts, at Ichaboe, and many more are on their way with cargoes from that place, so that the market will, no doubt, be immediately supplied with abundance, at very moderate prices. This was the guano equivalent of the American gold rush. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Ichaboe - mode of shipping the guano, 1844" takes us back to the bustling era of the 19th century. The image showcases a significant event in history, depicting men hard at work on Ichaboe Island off the coast of southwest Africa. In this engraving from an edition of "Illustrated London News" we witness a remarkable scene unfolding before our eyes. A rowing boat filled with workers can be seen maneuvering through the crystal-clear waters, while ropes and pulleys are utilized to load bird manure onto waiting cargo ships. This peculiar cargo, known as guano, was highly sought after during this time due to its value as a natural fertilizer. Lieutenant Petrie's account reveals that Liverpool alone had already received twelve ships carrying a staggering total of 6670 tons of guano by May that year. With many more vessels en route from Ichaboe Island and beyond, it is evident that this industry was booming during the Industrial Revolution. The print captures not only the industrious nature of these workers but also their determination to meet growing demands for fertilizers in Britain. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and resourcefulness in harnessing natural resources for economic gain. As we gaze upon this historic snapshot frozen in time, we cannot help but marvel at how such seemingly mundane tasks played an integral role in shaping industries and economies during this transformative period.
