Interior of Whitby Abbey, c1915. Artist: William Callow

Interior of Whitby Abbey, c1915. Whitby Abbey, North Yorkshire, 2009. The first abbey at Whitby was founded in 657 by Oswy, King of Northumbria. It was abandoned in 867 after being ransacked by Vikings. The abbey was refounded in the late 11th century but fell into ruin after it was closed in 1540 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The atmospheric ruins were part of the inspiration behind Bram Stokers novel Dracula, published in 1897. From The Studio Volume 67. [London Offices of the Studio, London, 1916]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the hauntingly beautiful interior of Whitby Abbey, captured by the talented artist William Callow in 1915. Located in North Yorkshire, this historic abbey has a rich and tumultuous past that dates back to its founding in 657 by King Oswy of Northumbria. However, it faced destruction at the hands of Vikings in 867 and was later refounded before falling into ruin during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540. The atmospheric ruins depicted here served as a significant inspiration for Bram Stoker's iconic novel Dracula, published in 1897. The image perfectly captures the ethereal charm and architectural grandeur of this ancient religious site. Callow's watercolour technique brings out every intricate detail within the abbey's interior, emphasizing its historical significance. The play of light and shadows creates an enchanting ambiance that transports viewers back to a bygone era. This remarkable print is part of The Studio Volume 67 collection from London Offices of the Studio, dating back to 1916. It serves as a testament to both Callow's artistic prowess and Whitby Abbey's enduring allure throughout history. Whether you are drawn to its spiritual essence or fascinated by its connection with literature, this print is sure to captivate all who behold it.
