James Younger, American outlaw, c1869-1876 (1954)

James Younger, American outlaw, c1869-1876 (1954). Together with his brothers Cole, John and Bob, James Younger formed part of the notorious James-Younger gang, with Jesse and Frank James. The gang robbed banks, stagecoaches and trains across the West between 1869 and 1876. John was killed in a gunfight with Pinkertons agents in 1874. The surviving three Youngers were wounded and captured by a posse after the gang robbed a bank in Northfield, Minnesota on 7th September 1876. All three were sentenced to life mprisonment after pleading guilty to their crimes in order to avoid hanging. James was paroled in 1901 but committed suicide the following year because the terms of his parole did not permit him to marry the woman he had become engaged to. A print from the Pictorial History of the Wild West, by James D Horan and Paul Sann, Spring Books, London, 1954

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of James Younger, an infamous American outlaw from the late 19th century. Alongside his brothers Cole, John, and Bob, James formed a formidable part of the notorious James-Younger gang, which wreaked havoc across the American West between 1869 and 1876. Known for their audacious bank robberies, stagecoach heists, and train hold-ups, this bandit family struck fear into the hearts of many. Tragedy befell the Youngers when John lost his life in a fierce gunfight with Pinkerton agents in 1874. The remaining three brothers were wounded during their last daring escapade - a bank robbery in Northfield, Minnesota on September 7th, 1876. Captured by a determined posse shortly after their crime spree came to an end. Pleading guilty to avoid execution by hanging; all three siblings received life imprisonment sentences. Although James was eventually paroled in 1901 after serving over two decades behind bars tragedy struck again as he took his own life just one year later due to restrictions that prevented him from marrying his beloved fiancée. This evocative image is sourced from "The Pictorial History of the Wild West" by authors James D Horan and Paul Sann published in London in 1954. It serves as a powerful reminder of America's wild past - where outlaws like James Younger roamed free amidst lawlessness and adventure on the untamed frontier.
