Jan Leeghwater, Dutch mill builder and hydraulic engineer 1608 (c1870). Leeghwater was responsible for begiining the process of the reclamation of land from the North Sea in the Netherlands. Beginning in 1607, he drained the Beemster polder, the first to be created using windmills. By 1635 three further polders had been drained under his supervision.
