EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken around 1910, we witness the legendary John Nevil Maskelyne performing a mesmerizing spirit cabinet illusion. With his eccentric attire and enigmatic presence, Maskelyne takes center stage as he attempts to recreate a trick originally performed by fraudulent spiritualists from America. Challenged by Sir Hiram Maxim, an accomplished inventor himself, Maskelyne rises to the occasion with his signature flair. As described in "Mr. Maskelynes Reply to Sir Hiram Maxim" published in "The Strand Magazine" he employs various tools of the trade to deceive and astonish his audience. One such tool is a coach-horn or megaphone that aids him in picking up objects and seamlessly passing them through an aperture in the securely tied door of the cabinet. Maskelyne's illustrious career spanned not only magic but also escapology, paranormal investigation, and even invention (he can be credited with inventing the pay toilet). His multifaceted talents made him a true showman and an icon of British entertainment during this era. This intriguing photograph captures both the artistry and ingenuity behind Maskelyne's performances. It serves as a testament to his dedication as well as his ability to captivate audiences with illusions that defy explanation. As we gaze upon this image today, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand one of history's greatest magicians at work – John Nevil Maskelyne.
