John Ruskin, 1853-1854, (1944). Creator: John Everett Millais

John Ruskin, 1853-1854, (1944). Portrait of English artist, critic and author John Ruskin (1819-1900), by his friend John Everett Millais. It was painted at Brig o Turk, in the Trossachs near Stirling in Scotland, and the frequent rain and plagues of midges made the experience trying for both sitter and painter. To complicate matters further, Millais was falling in love with Ruskins wife Effie. She left Ruskin and married Millais, and Ruskin eventually gave the picture to his old Oxford friend Sir Henry Acland. Painting in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. From " British Portrait Painters", by John Russell. [Collins, London, 1944]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the portrait of John Ruskin, a renowned English artist, critic, and author. Created by his close friend John Everett Millais in 1853-1854, this painting showcases Ruskin's distinguished features and intellectual aura. The artwork was completed amidst challenging circumstances at Brig o Turk in the Trossachs near Stirling, Scotland. Both the incessant rain and swarms of midges tested the patience of both sitter and painter. However, there was an additional layer of complexity to this artistic endeavor. Millais found himself falling deeply in love with Ruskin's wife Effie during the process. Eventually, Effie left Ruskin and married Millais. As a result of these personal entanglements, Ruskin decided to gift the painting to his old Oxford friend Sir Henry Acland. Currently housed in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, this oil painting is a testament to both friendship and complicated relationships within artistic circles. It serves as a reminder that even great artists are not immune to human emotions and conflicts. The photograph offers viewers a glimpse into 19th-century Britain's social history while showcasing two prominent figures from that era: John Ruskin and John Everett Millais. With its breathtaking backdrop featuring waterfalls cascading over rocks against a mountainous landscape, this portrait encapsulates not only their individual personas but also reflects upon nature's grandeur intertwined with human affairs.
