John Wilkes, English politician, 1763 (1895)

John Wilkes, English politician, 1763 (1895). Wilkes is wearing a wig that Hogarth has fashioned into two horns. He holds a cap entitled liberty that Hogarth has positioned to make it look like a halo. On the table are copies of his newspaper The North Briton. In 1762 Hogarth had published a satire, The Times, that, for Hogarth, was unusually anti-war. It angered many politicians, including John Wilkes. Therefore Wilkes attacked Hogarth in The North Briton, by depicting him as an old fool. In response Hogarth produced this engraving. A print from The Magazine of Art, Cassell and Company, Limited, London, Paris and Melbourne, 1895

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a political feud between two influential figures in 18th century England. The subject, John Wilkes, an English politician known for his controversial views and outspoken nature, is portrayed wearing a wig that has been cleverly fashioned into two horns by the renowned artist William Hogarth. In a satirical twist, Hogarth positions a cap entitled "liberty" on Wilkes' head to create the illusion of a halo, highlighting their opposing ideologies. The composition also includes copies of Wilkes' newspaper, The North Briton, strategically placed on the table beside him. This publication was at the center of their dispute as it became a platform for both men to express their conflicting opinions. In response to being depicted as an old fool in The North Briton by Wilkes himself, Hogarth retaliated with this engraving. The black and white monochrome aesthetic adds depth and intensity to this thought-provoking image. It serves as a reminder of the power art holds in reflecting societal tensions and political discourse during that era. With its intricate details and symbolic elements, this print offers viewers an intriguing glimpse into history while capturing the essence of these prominent individuals who played significant roles in shaping British politics during the seven years war period (1756-1763).
