Kalergi, the Greek patriot, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Kalergi, the Greek patriot, 1844. Portrait of Greek soldier and politician Dimitrios Kallergis, one of the most important protagonists of the 3 September 1843 Revolution. Kalergi...who has taken so distinguished a position in the recent revolution in Greece...was bom in Candia, and is now about 38 years of age. Throughout the war of independence, he distinguished himself by his remarkable bravery. By a coup de main he succeeded in taking Karabusa in 1825, with a few men; and at the battle fought between the Greeks and Turks in the plain of Athens in 1827, having been severely wounded, he was made a prisoner. The bravest of the Cretans, among whom was his brother Emanuel, were slain around him. By the Seraskiers orders he was brought into his presence on a mans back; and after asking him some questions, he ordered him to be decapitated - a ceremony that had been already performed on several hundreds. The Albanian Bey, however, who had taken him prisoner, claimed him as his own; and the commotion this individual raised on seeing himself about to be deprived of the chance of making a profit out of his prisoner was so great, that the Seraskier at last consented to spare his life, and contented himself with slitting off one of his ears to send to Constantinople. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Dimitrios Kallergis, a Greek soldier and politician who played a pivotal role in the 3 September 1843 Revolution. The portrait showcases his strong and determined demeanor, reflecting his unwavering commitment to the cause of Greek independence. Born in Candia, Kallergis emerged as a prominent figure during the war of independence with his exceptional bravery. In 1825, he displayed remarkable audacity by capturing Karabusa with only a handful of men through a daring coup de main. However, fate dealt him a cruel blow during the battle between Greeks and Turks in Athens' plain in 1827 when he was severely wounded and taken prisoner. The brutality inflicted upon him is evident from this image's historical context. Despite being brought before the Seraskier on someone's back, Kallergis faced an uncertain future as hundreds had already been decapitated at that time. Fortunately for him, an Albanian Bey claimed ownership over him as his captive. The tension surrounding this momentous event is palpable within this photograph; one can almost feel the commotion caused by the Bey's objections to losing potential profit from selling Kallergis into slavery. Eventually spared from execution but not unscathed, one ear was brutally severed off to be sent to Constantinople as proof of capture. This powerful visual representation serves as both tribute and reminder of Kallergis' indomitable spirit amidst adversity—a testament to his enduring legacy within Greek history.
