EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing King George V and Queen Mary with the Victory bell for Westminster Abbey. Taken sometime between the 1910s and 1920s, this image exudes regality and power. King George V, born in Marlborough House on June 3rd, 1865, ascended to the throne in 1910 after his father's passing. Known for his progressive decisions during his reign, he appointed Britain's first Labour Prime Minister in 1924 and introduced the tradition of broadcasting a Christmas message to the people in 1932. In this photograph, we see King George V donning a distinguished top hat while Queen Mary stands elegantly by his side. The couple is surrounded by a crowd of admirers as they proudly hold onto the Victory bell—an emblematic symbol of their reign at Westminster Abbey. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of timelessness to this image, emphasizing its historical significance. It serves as a reminder of both the religious importance associated with Westminster Abbey and the influential role played by King George V during his tenure. This remarkable print offers us a glimpse into an era defined by royalty, tradition, and societal change—a testament to the enduring legacy left behind by King George V and Queen Mary.
