King Stephen taken prisoner, 1141
King Stephen taken prisoner, 1141. Stephen (1096-1154), the last Norman King of England, reigned from 1135 to 1154. He supported the claim to the throne of Matilda (1102-1167), the daughter of Henry I, before usurping her when Henry died in 1135 and claiming the throne for himself. England descended into a period of civil war. Stephen was captured after he was defeated by Matildas army at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141 but was freed in an exchange for the captive Robert, Earl of Gloucester, Matildas most able lieutenant. Matildas time on the throne was brief, as a rebellion forced her to flee London. Stephen regained the throne and Matilda was besieged in Oxford, but escaped to Wallingford. The conflict dragged on until 1148 when Matilda returned to France after the Earl of Gloucester died. Eventually, in 1154, her son was crowned king as Henry II after Stephen died

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in English history - the capture of King Stephen in 1141. King Stephen, the last Norman ruler of England, reigned from 1135 to 1154 amidst a period of civil war. Initially supporting Matilda's claim to the throne after Henry I's death, Stephen later usurped her and claimed the crown for himself. In this image, we see King Stephen on horseback, surrounded by soldiers clad in armor. The intensity of battle is evident as they engage with Matilda's army at the Battle of Lincoln. Despite his valiant efforts, Stephen was defeated and taken prisoner. However, this captivity did not last long. A strategic exchange took place between Matilda and Robert, Earl of Gloucester - her most skilled lieutenant - resulting in Stephen's release. This event marked a turning point in their conflict as Matilda faced rebellion and fled London while Stephen regained control. The engraving beautifully depicts the medieval setting with its attention to detail on both human figures and horses alike. It transports us back to a time when monarchs fought for power on horseback amidst tumultuous times. Ultimately, it would take several more years before peace was restored to England under Henry II's reign after both Matilda and Stephen passed away. Nevertheless, this image serves as a reminder of an era defined by political intrigue and military strife that shaped the course of English history forever.
