A lady of the court, Marie de Medici as a widow, and a gentleman, c1620 (1882-1884). Marie de Medici married King Henry IV of France in 1600. After Henry was assassinated in 1610, their eight year-old son, Louis XIII became king, but Marie ruled as regent until he reached the age of thirteen, and continued to be de facto ruler of France until Louis asserted his authority in 1617, exiling her to the Chateau of Blois. A print from La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles, Volume IV, F Roy editor, A Challamel, Saint-Antoine, 1882-1884

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Marie de Medici, a lady of the court, as she mourns the loss of her beloved husband, King Henry IV of France. Taken in the early 17th century, Marie is depicted here in her widowhood alongside a gentleman who remains unidentified. The image showcases their attire and fashion choices that were prevalent during this era. Marie's life took an unexpected turn when her husband was tragically assassinated in 1610. Despite her grief, she courageously stepped into the role of regent for their young son Louis XIII until he came of age. However, power struggles ensued within the French monarchy, leading to Marie's exile to Chateau de Blois by her own son. In this portrait-like engraving from La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles (1882-1884), we witness Marie's resilience and strength amidst adversity. Her elegant black dress adorned with lace reflects both mourning and royalty while symbolizing her position as queen consort. The identity and significance of the gentleman accompanying Marie remain shrouded in mystery. Perhaps he represents a confidant or advisor during these tumultuous times. This historical print serves as a reminder not only of Marie de Medici's influential reign but also highlights the intricate details and fashion trends prevalent during this period in French history.
