Landscape, 1500s. Creator: Unknown

Landscape, 1500s. This screen by an Unkoku school artist is from a separated pair depicting the Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang Rivers, a popular Chinese Song dynasty painting and poetry theme that inspired many works in Japan and Korea. The location of the other screen is unknown. The views here are, from right to left: evening bell from a mist-shrouded temple, geese descending to a sandbar, sunset glow over a fishing village, and mountain village in clearing mist. The " crab-claw" style of the trees, in which the branches resemble the curved claws of a crab, and the stippling effect indicate a familiarity with Korean interpretations of Chinese Song dynasty painting styles. Painters of the Unkoku school--named for painter Sesshu Toyos (1420-1506) residence in Yamaguchi at the southern tip of Japans main island of Honshu--were the stylistic descendants of Sesshu, and would likely have had access to many Korean paintings in the collection of their patrons, the Mori family

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing landscape from the 1500s, created by an unknown artist belonging to the Unkoku school. The artwork is part of a separated pair that depicts the Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang Rivers, a renowned theme in Chinese Song dynasty painting and poetry. This theme served as inspiration for numerous works in Japan and Korea during that era. The screen captured in this photo features four stunning views arranged from right to left. Starting with an evening bell resonating from a temple enveloped in mist, it leads us to witness geese gracefully descending onto a sandbar. As we continue our visual journey, we are greeted by the warm glow of sunset over a picturesque fishing village. Finally, our gaze settles on a mountain village emerging through clearing mist. Noteworthy is the unique "crab-claw" style exhibited by the trees in this artwork, where their branches resemble curved claws of crabs. Additionally, intricate stippling techniques employed here indicate familiarity with Korean interpretations of Chinese Song dynasty painting styles. Belonging to the lineage of Sesshu Toyos (1420-1506), painters associated with the Unkoku school were likely influenced by Korean paintings present within their patrons' collections - specifically, the Mori family who resided in Yamaguchi at Honshu's southern tip. This remarkable print allows us to appreciate both nature's beauty and cultural exchange between China, Japan, and Korea during ancient times.
