Leaf from a Book of Hours: Annunciation to the Shepherds, c. 1460. Creator: Unknown

Leaf from a Book of Hours: Annunciation to the Shepherds, c. 1460. The anonymous painter of this leaf has been associated with other books of hours that were produced in and for the city of Troyes. Nevertheless, his style may have originated in Paris where he seems to have developed his compositions, figures, and settings. He painted in a highly personal style that can be easily recognized by its facial types, architectural forms, and, in many miniatures, an apparent love of sumptuous textile patterns. The present miniature combines charm with dignified monumentality. The shepherd and shepherdess gaze upward toward the host of angels. At their feet, a dog is curled in slumber while sheep graze in lush green fields. The receding vista of chateaux, a lake, and distant hills cloaked in blue haze is the very essence of what a medieval miniature should be

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf from a Book of Hours, specifically the Annunciation to the Shepherds, dating back to around 1460. The anonymous painter responsible for this exquisite piece is believed to have been associated with other books of hours created in Troyes, although his style may have originated in Paris. His unique artistic approach is characterized by distinct facial types, architectural forms, and an evident fondness for lavish textile patterns. In this particular miniature, we witness a harmonious blend of charm and grandeur. The shepherd and shepherdess are depicted gazing upwards towards a multitude of angels hovering above them. A peaceful scene unfolds at their feet as a dog rests peacefully while sheep graze amidst lush green fields. As our eyes wander further into the distance, we are treated to an enchanting vista featuring chateaux fading into the horizon alongside a serene lake and mist-covered hills painted in shades of blue. This medieval masterpiece captures the essence of what makes miniatures so captivating - it transports us to another time and place where beauty intertwines with spirituality. Preserved on vellum using ink, tempera, and gold accents, this manuscript now resides within the esteemed collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art in Troyes. This remarkable artwork serves as a testament to the skillful craftsmanship and enduring allure that continues to captivate art enthusiasts even after centuries have passed.
