Leaf from a Psalter: Historiated Initial D with The Trinity, c

Leaf from a Psalter: Historiated Initial D with The Trinity, c.1310. Although English, the design of this psalter page follows the fashion of French book illumination. In particular, the white flesh tones, elegant wavy coiffures, and elongated fingers of the figures relate this leaf to the Queen Mary Psalter, probably the most " Parisian" of all surviving English illuminated manuscripts of the early 1300s. The Queen Mary Psalter is named after the 16th-century English queen who appears to have once owned it. The artistic connections between France and England during this period are puzzling and often show influence moving in both directions. The workshop of the Queen Mary Psalter appears to have been active in East Anglia between 1310 and 1335, though its specific location remains unknown. It presumably competed with workshops in Norwich, Cambridge, Bury St. Edmunds, and the so-called " Fenland" workshops. A large initial D for Dixit dominus domino.... (The Lord said unto my Lord.... ) introduces the text, the opening of Psalm 109, within which appears the Trinity

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf from a Psalter, specifically a historiated initial D with The Trinity, dating back to around 1310. Despite being English in origin, the design of this psalter page is heavily influenced by French book illumination trends. The figures depicted on the leaf exhibit white flesh tones, elegant wavy coiffures, and elongated fingers - characteristics that connect it to the renowned Queen Mary Psalter. Named after an English queen from the 16th century who was believed to have once owned it, the Queen Mary Psalter stands as one of the most "Parisian" surviving illuminated manuscripts from early 14th-century England. During this period, artistic connections between France and England were complex and often displayed influences flowing in both directions. The workshop responsible for creating the Queen Mary Psalter operated somewhere in East Anglia between 1310 and 1335; however, its exact location remains unknown. It likely competed with other workshops located in Norwich, Cambridge, Bury St. Edmunds, as well as those known as "Fenland" workshops. The focal point of this image is a large initial D introducing the text - specifically Psalm 109's opening line: Dixit dominus domino. . . (The Lord said unto my Lord. . . ) Within this elaborate letter resides an exquisite depiction of The Trinity itself. This remarkable piece serves as a testament to medieval artistry and highlights the intriguing interplay between different regions' artistic styles during that era.
