EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Leicester Square in London, circa 1750. The square, developed in the 1670s, was once a prestigious address and home to Leicester House, depicted as a grand residence with a forecourt in the top right corner of the image. This house served as the dwelling for Frederick, Prince of Wales during that period. However, by the late 18th century, Leicester Square had lost its fashionable allure and transformed into a hub for popular entertainment. The print from "The History of the Squares of London Topographical and Historical" provides us with a glimpse into this transition. In this monochromatic scene, we see not only buildings but also elements of nature such as trees and plants adorning the square's surroundings. A horse-drawn carriage traverses along one side of the road while people go about their daily activities outside. The print offers us an insight into both architectural features and transportation methods prevalent during that era. It is evident that despite its changing status over time, Leicester Square still retained some remnants of its former glory. Overall, this image allows us to travel back in time to experience life in 18th-century London through its architecture, landscape design, transport modes, and social dynamics captured within this historic snapshot.
