Lieut. Bruce, 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
Lieut. Bruce, 1911, (1913). Lieutenant Wilfred Bruce (1874-1953) on the deck of the Terra Nova of which he was second officer. He was also Scotts brother-in-law. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Lieutenant Wilfred Bruce, the brother-in-law of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, on the deck of the Terra Nova in 1911. As second officer of the ship, Bruce played a crucial role in Scott's final expedition to Antarctica. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), aimed to continue scientific research and exploration that Scott had initiated during his earlier Discovery Expedition. The team consisted of various experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists, and physicists. Scott's ultimate goal was to become the first person to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon their arrival on January 17th, 1912 after enduring treacherous conditions and blizzards along their journey across Antarctica's icy terrain; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Tragically delayed by harsh weather conditions and dwindling supplies on their return journey from the pole; Scott and his remaining team members - Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans - succumbed to exhaustion and extreme cold at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later alongside poignant diaries documenting their heroic struggle. This evocative image is part of "Scott's Last Expedition" volume II published in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , providing a glimpse into one of history's most iconic polar expeditions.
