Lieut. Evans and Nelson Cutting a Cave for Cold Storage, 12 January 1911, (1913)

Lieut. Evans and Nelson Cutting a Cave for Cold Storage, 12 January 1911, (1913). Petty officer Edgar Evans and biologist Edward W Nelson making an ice-cave. One of them is sitting on a box of Horlicks malted milk. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, Lieut. Evans and Nelson are seen diligently cutting a cave for cold storage on 12 January 1911 during the Terra Nova Expedition. The image showcases the unwavering determination of these brave men as they work together in the harsh Antarctic environment. Lieut. Edgar Evans, a petty officer, is depicted sitting atop a box of Horlicks malted milk, highlighting their reliance on essential supplies to sustain them during their arduous journey. This snapshot offers a glimpse into the daily challenges faced by Captain Robert Falcon Scott's team as they pushed forward towards their ultimate goal – reaching the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition was not only an ambitious quest to be the first to reach this remote location but also aimed at advancing scientific knowledge through various disciplines such as geology, zoology, meteorology, and physics. Led by Scott himself and accompanied by accomplished individuals like biologist Edward W Nelson, they sought to continue important research initiated during Scott's previous expedition. Tragically, despite their valiant efforts and perseverance against treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies, Scott's team arrived at the South Pole on 17 January 1912 only to discover that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already beaten them there. Stranded by adverse conditions and facing severe shortages of food and fuel on their return journey, Scott and his companions met with devastating consequences in March of that year. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of both the extraordinary courage exhibited by these explorers in pursuit of scientific discovery and exploration while commemorating their sacrifice for future generations.
