Lieut. Tryggve Gran, c1910–1913, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting
Lieut. Tryggve Gran, c1910– 1913, (1913). Ski expert Tryggve Gran. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the fearless spirit of Lieut. Tryggve Gran, a ski expert who played a crucial role in the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken between 1910 and 1913 by renowned artist Herbert Ponting, this image showcases Gran's determination as he navigates through the treacherous icy terrain. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), was an ambitious scientific mission led by Scott to explore Antarctica and reach the South Pole. With a diverse team comprising geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, meteorologists, and physicists among others; their goal was to continue important scientific research while aiming to be the first to conquer the geographic South Pole. On January 17th, 1912, after enduring countless hardships and battling extreme weather conditions alongside Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans; Scott finally reached their long-awaited destination only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and running out of supplies on their return journey from the pole; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. Their bodies were discovered eight months later along with poignant diaries that documented their heroic struggle against nature's unforgiving forces. This print serves as a powerful reminder of Lieut. Tryggve Gran's indomitable spirit amidst one of history's most challenging expeditions - forever etching his name into polar exploration lore alongside Captain Robert Falcon Scott.
