Lieutenant Georges Guynemer meeting French generals, 19 February 1917
Lieutenant Georges Guynemer meeting French generals, 19 February 1917. Generals Foch, Gerard, Guillaumat, and Lyautey inspecting one of the aircraft of Guynemers squadron, Groupe de Chasse No 12, known as The Storks. Georges Guynemer, French fighter ace, c1916. Guynemer (1894-1917) became the first French ace to attain 50 victories, a mark he reached at the end of July 1917. As his tally grew, Guynemer was lionized by the French press and became a national hero, with his exploits going some way to taking the publics mind off the appalling losses being sustained in the trenches at the time. On 11 September 1917, with a total of 53 kills to his credit, Guynemer was apparently shot down after attacking a German observation plane. Neither his aeroplane nor his body were ever found

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a historic meeting between Lieutenant Georges Guynemer and French generals on 19 February 1917. The image showcases Generals Foch, Gerard, Guillaumat, and Lyautey inspecting one of the aircraft belonging to Guynemer's renowned squadron, Groupe de Chasse No 12, famously known as The Storks. Lieutenant Georges Guynemer was an exceptional French fighter ace who achieved great success during World War I. By July 1917, he became the first French ace to attain an impressive record of 50 victories. As his tally grew higher, Guynemer gained immense popularity among the French press and emerged as a national hero. His remarkable exploits served as a temporary distraction for the public from the devastating losses experienced in the trenches at that time. Tragically, on 11 September 1917, with a total of 53 kills to his credit, Guynemer seemingly fell victim to enemy fire while attacking a German observation plane. To this day, neither his aircraft nor his body has ever been found. This poignant photograph captures not only the significance of Lieutenant Georges Guynemer's achievements but also symbolizes unity between military personnel during times of war. It serves as a powerful reminder of bravery and sacrifice exhibited by individuals like Guynemer who fought valiantly amidst unimaginable circumstances on the Western Front during World War I.
