London in Peril of Starvation, 1912, (1933). London dockers went on strike when Lord Devonport, head of the Port of London Authority, refused to agree to their demands. Ben Tillett, socialist trade union leader and politician, said: Hunger and poverty have driven the dockers and shipworkers to this present resort. Fears of resulting food shortages caused the army to be brought in to guard convoys of supplies. From " The Pageant of the Century". [Odhams Press Ltd, 1933]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "London in Peril of Starvation, 1912" captures a pivotal moment in British history during the early 20th century. Taken by T E Joy in 1933, it showcases the dire consequences of a dockers' strike that shook the city to its core. The image depicts a crowded avenue filled with men, both dock workers and soldiers, as they navigate through the streets on horse-drawn vehicles. The strike was ignited when Lord Devonport, head of the Port of London Authority, refused to meet the demands of these hardworking individuals who were already suffering from hunger and poverty. Fearing food shortages and unrest among its citizens, authorities called upon the army to escort convoys carrying essential supplies. This powerful photograph encapsulates not only an era marked by industrial action but also sheds light on societal issues such as unemployment and workers' rights. It serves as a reminder that even in one of Europe's most prosperous cities like London, poverty could drive people to extreme measures. As part of "The Pageant of the Century" published by Odhams Press Ltd. , this image stands as a testament to T E Joy's ability to capture significant moments in time. Through his lens, he immortalizes this period marred by social unrest while providing viewers with a glimpse into London's past struggles for economic justice.
