Madeirese villa, near Funchal, 1845. Creator: Unknown

Madeirese villa, near Funchal, 1845. Grapevine growing along a pergola on the island of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. One of the modes in which the vines are grown.... Here we see...a Marine Villa, with arches supporting trellis-work, through which are seen the vessels in the Bay of Funchal. Opposite the town, the steep shingle beach is ill adapted for sea-bathing, for which purpose this villa was originally solely built; it lies about a mile and a quarter from the town, in a snug and beautiful little bay, fronting the south, and backed with cliffs, which have, from time to time, fallen in, and formed this sheltered nook: here the north-east wind is never felt, but it is fanned by the mild southern breezes from the Atlantic. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a Madeirese villa near Funchal in 1845. The image showcases a stunning grapevine, gracefully growing along a pergola on the picturesque island of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. In this enchanting scene, we witness a Marine Villa adorned with arches that support intricate trellis-work. Through these arches, we catch glimpses of vessels peacefully anchored in the Bay of Funchal. Originally built solely for sea-bathing purposes due to its proximity to the ill-suited shingle beach opposite town, this villa now stands as an architectural marvel. Situated approximately one and a quarter miles from town, nestled within a snug and beautiful little bay facing southward, this haven is backed by majestic cliffs formed over time by fallen debris. Shielded from the harsh north-east winds but caressed by gentle southern breezes from the vast Atlantic Ocean, it offers respite and tranquility. The image was originally featured in "Illustrated London News" in 1845 (Vol VII), showcasing British fascination with exotic locations during that century. This engraving transports us back to an era when women leisurely strolled through tropical gardens while enjoying delicious grapes plucked fresh from nearby vineyards. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece captured by an unknown creator, our imagination takes flight into Victorian times where relaxation under shaded terraces amidst lush greenery was cherished above all else.
