The Marriage at Cana, c.1530-c.1532. Creator: Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen

The Marriage at Cana, c.1530-c.1532. Other Title(s): The calling of St John during the marriage at Cana.
This painting depicts a moment that preceded the miracle. According to a late-medieval tradition, the wedding feast at Cana celebrated the marriage of John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalen. Seated in the centre behind the table are the beardless John and his bride, with the apostles Peter and Andrew to the left of them, at the moment when the meal is being served. In the foreground the Virgin Mary turns to her right and grasps the shoulder of the servant who tells her that there is no wine. When she passes the news on to Christ he reacts dismissively. She then tells the servants to follow the instructions of her son, who tells them to fill the barrels with water, whereupon it turns into wine (John 2:3-10). EDITORS COMMENTS

This stunning 16th century painting, titled "The Marriage at Cana" or "The Calling of St John during the Marriage at Cana," is a masterpiece by the Dutch artist Jan Cornelisz Vermejen. The scene depicts a moment before the famous miracle recorded in the Bible's Gospel of John (2:3-11). At the center of the painting, we see the young John the Evangelist and his bride, Mary Magdalen, seated at the table. To their left, the apostles Peter and Andrew are engaged in conversation. In the foreground, the Virgin Mary, holding a candle, turns to a servant and expresses concern that there is no wine left for the wedding feast. When she shares this news with Christ, he dismisses her concerns. Mary then instructs the servants to follow the instructions of her son, who tells them to fill the barrels with water. Miraculously, the water turns into wine. The painting is rich in detail, with intricately rendered figures, furniture, and candles casting a warm, inviting glow over the scene. The use of color and light adds to the sense of depth and realism, transporting the viewer back in time to this biblical event.
