Meeting of Stephen and Prince Henry at Wallingford, Oxfordshire, 1153

Meeting of Stephen and Prince Henry at Wallingford, Oxfordshire, 1153. The middle of the 12th century in England was dominated by a civil war between the rival claimants to the throne, Matilda, the daughter of the prevoius King, Henry I, and Stephen, his nephew. In general, apart from a brief period in 1141 Stephen held the upper hand in the conflict and the throne. In 1153, Matildas son, Henry of Anjou, invaded. After a standoff between Henrys and Stephens armies at Wallingford, a compromise was reached whereby Henry would succeed Stephen as king after his death, Stephens son and heir, Eustace, having already died. He was duly crowned Henry II, the first of the Angevin kings of England, in 1154

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant historical moment - the Meeting of Stephen and Prince Henry at Wallingford, Oxfordshire in 1153. The image transports us back to the turbulent middle of the 12th century in England, during a fierce civil war for the throne between Matilda and Stephen. Throughout this conflict, Stephen mostly held control except for a brief period when Matilda's son, Henry of Anjou, invaded. The standoff between their armies at Wallingford led to a crucial compromise: after Stephen's death, Henry would succeed him as king. This agreement marked the beginning of the Angevin dynasty in England. The photograph showcases three key figures involved in this historic meeting - King Stephen, Matilda (the daughter of previous King Henry I), and Prince Henry (later known as King Henry II). Their expressions reveal both tension and negotiation as they discuss matters that would shape English history. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of timelessness to the scene while emphasizing its medieval setting. It serves as a reminder of how power struggles have shaped nations throughout history. This remarkable print not only immortalizes an important event but also invites contemplation on themes such as monarchy, warfare, and political compromise. It is a visual testament to the complexities inherent in ruling a country during times of turmoil.
