Petty Officer Edgar Evans (1876-1912), Lieutenant Henry Birdie Bowers (1883-1912), Dr Edward Wilson (1872-1912) and expedition leader Captain Robert F Scott (1868-1912) all died on the way back from the South Pole. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. This poignant print captures a moment of camaraderie and resilience amidst the harsh Antarctic landscape. Taken during the Terra Nova Expedition in 1911, it features members of the Polar Party enjoying a meal in their camp. From left to right, we see Petty Officer Edgar Evans, Lieutenant Henry Birdie Bowers, Dr Edward Wilson, and expedition leader Captain Robert F Scott. Little did they know that this would be one of their last shared meals together. Tragically, all four men depicted here lost their lives on the treacherous journey back from the South Pole. Their deaths marked a devastating end to Scott's final expedition. The British Antarctic explorer had embarked on this ambitious mission with a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, engineers, ski experts, meteorologists and physicists. Their objective was twofold: to continue scientific research initiated during Scott's previous voyage and to claim the honor of being the first humans to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon reaching their destination on January 17th 1912 after enduring grueling conditions and setbacks caused by blizzards and dwindling supplies - they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already beaten them there by a month. Trapped by extreme weather conditions while making their way back from disappointment at not achieving their goal; Scott and his remaining companions perished at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies were found along with diaries documenting their heroic struggle for survival. This haunting image serves as a reminder of both human determination in pursuit of exploration but also highlights nature's unforgiving power over even our most valiant efforts.
