Midwinter Day, 1912 - The Officers, (1913). Artist: Frank Debenham

Midwinter Day, 1912 - The Officers: (Left to right, Cherry-Gerrard, Wright, Atkinson, Nelson, Gran), (1913). Zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard, physicist Charless Wright, surgeon Edward Atkinson, biologist Edward W Nelson, ski expert Tryggve Gran. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
Midwinter Day, 1912 - The Officers" is a captivating print that captures the essence of bravery and scientific exploration. Created by artist Frank Debenham in 1913, it showcases the officers of Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition to the Antarctic. In this poignant image, we see five remarkable men who embarked on an extraordinary journey. From left to right, they are Zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard, physicist Charless Wright, surgeon Edward Atkinson, biologist Edward W Nelson, and ski expert Tryggve Gran. These individuals were part of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913), which aimed to continue scientific research while also conquering the South Pole. Led by Captain Scott himself, this diverse team included geologists, photographers, engineers, meteorologists – each with their own expertise contributing to their ambitious mission. However noble their intentions were though; fate had other plans for them. On January 17th, 1912 – after enduring treacherous conditions and countless challenges – Scott and his closest companions reached the South Pole only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them there a month earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey back home; Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. This haunting photograph serves as a reminder of these brave souls' unwavering determination in pursuit of knowledge and discovery. Their bodies may have been found eight months later along with their diaries but their legacy lives on as testament to human resilience amidst nature's harshest elements.
