Monument to Alexander II in the Moscow Kremlin, Russia, c1904-c1905. Known as The Liberator for his emancipation of the serfs in 1861, Alexander (1818-1881) was assassinated in St Petersburg by a bomb thrown by a member of a revolutionary group known as Narodnaya Volya (Peoples Will). The monument was erected in 1898 but was destroyed by the Bolsheviks in 1918. A new monument to Alexander was built in 2005.
