Napoleon Bonaparte, French general and Emperor. Artist: Paul Delaroche
Napoleon Bonaparte, French general and Emperor. Napoleon (1769-1821) enjoyed a meteoric rise through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army. In 1799 he led a coup to overthrow the government, the Directory, and became first consul and effective dictator of France. In 1804, he declared himself Emperor, and began a series of military campaigns across Europe, the Napoleonic Wars. Victories such as Austerlitz and Jena led to France establishing its power across much of the continent. In 1812, however, Napoleon embarked on a disastrous invasion of Russia and defeat at Leipzig in 1813 led to his abdication and exile to Elba. He ecaped in 1815, raised another army, but was finally defeated by Wellington at Waterloo, and exiled again to St Helena. From Harmsworth, History of the World, published in London, 1909

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic figure of Napoleon Bonaparte, a French general and Emperor who left an indelible mark on history. Created by renowned artist Paul Delaroche, this portrait captures the essence of Napoleon's commanding presence and military prowess. Napoleon's remarkable journey began with his rapid ascent through the ranks of the French Revolutionary army in the late 18th century. In 1799, he orchestrated a coup to overthrow the government and assumed power as first consul, effectively becoming France's dictator. Five years later, he declared himself Emperor and embarked on a series of victorious military campaigns across Europe known as the Napoleonic Wars. With triumphs like Austerlitz and Jena under his belt, Napoleon solidified France's dominance over much of the continent. However, his ambitious invasion of Russia in 1812 proved disastrous, leading to defeat at Leipzig in 1813. This marked a turning point that ultimately led to his abdication and exile to Elba. Yet Napoleon's resilience was unmatched. He escaped from Elba in 1815, raised another army but faced final defeat at Waterloo by Wellington before being exiled once again to St Helena where he would spend his remaining years until his death in 1821. Through this striking portrait by Delaroche, we are reminded not only of Napoleon's military genius but also his complex legacy as both ruler and conqueror. His impact on European history cannot be understated; even centuries later, he continues to captivate our imagination with tales of ambition, power struggles, and grandeur.
