The Naval Review: the Flotilla of Gun-Boats off the Motherbank - drawn by R. Leitch, 1856. Creator: Unknown
The Naval Review: the Flotilla of Gun-Boats off the Motherbank - drawn by R. Leitch, 1856. Ships of the Royal Navy taking part in a display off the coast of Hampshire. When the firing was commenced against Southsea Castle, there were many thousand persons assembled under its walls, who, although expecting it, appeared considerably astonished as the loud report of the heavy guns suddenly crashed upon their ears. The gun-boats lay right across the entrance of Portsmouth Harbour, from shore to shore, nearly four miles, and the firing from such an extended line of heavy guns had a very imposing effect, though it was considered rather deficient, from the fortresses not returning their fire. After firing a few rounds each against their supposed foes, the gun-boats as well as the spectators were completely enveloped in smoke, which did not clear away until the firing ceased'. The Naval Review: The Flotilla of Gun-Boats off the Motherbank" is an intriguing and historic image captured by the skilled hand of R. Leitch in 1856. The photograph depicts an impressive display of the Royal Navy's gun-boats forming a flotilla off the coast of Hampshire, England. The ships, anchored in a line stretching nearly four miles across Portsmouth Harbour, were taking part in a naval review, a demonstration of military power and readiness. The scene is set against the backdrop of the Motherbank, a shoal located at the entrance of Portsmouth Harbour. The image captures the moment before the gun-boats commence their firing exercises against Southsea Castle, an imposing fortress located on the opposite shore. The anticipation is palpable as the crowd gathered under the castle walls, eagerly awaiting the spectacle. However, the unexpected roar of the heavy guns took the onlookers by surprise, as the gun-boats began their barrage. The deafening reports echoed across the harbour, and the smoke from the gunpowder filled the air, enveloping both the ships and the spectators. The scene was described in the "Illustrated London News" as having an "imposing effect," despite some criticism for the lack of response from the fortresses. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating insight into naval warfare during the mid-19th century. It serves as a reminder of the importance of military displays and the role they played in maintaining the peace and security of the time.
