EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the North entrance of the Blackwall Tunnel in London during the 20th century. Designed by Alexander Binnie, the chief engineer of the London County Council, this remarkable tunnel opened its doors to commuters in 1897. The construction of this engineering marvel employed cutting-edge techniques, including James Henry Greathead's tunnelling shield. The tunnel itself boasted a sophisticated design with glazed white brick lining and electric lighting illuminating its interior. It provided two lanes for wheeled traffic and dedicated footpaths for pedestrians, catering to both convenience and safety. This postcard from "The Souvenir Album, Views of London And The River Thames" offers a glimpse into Victorian-era transportation infrastructure. The image captures a bustling scene with horse-drawn vehicles traversing through the entrance, symbolizing an era where road transport played a vital role in connecting people and places. Located beneath the iconic River Thames, this black-and-white photograph transports us back to 19th-century Britain. Tower Hamlets serves as the backdrop for this historic landmark that continues to shape London's geography even today. Through this print by Alexander Binnie and James Henry Greathead's contributions to civil engineering, we are reminded of their significant impact on British transportation history. This visual documentation stands as a testament to their ingenuity and dedication towards creating efficient means of travel within one of Europe's most vibrant cities - London.
